Post on Trachodon Magazine's Cheek Teeth blog!

So. This blog has been very quiet for about the past year! But I have indeed been writing and also planning some exciting new somethings. One of those somethings, still in a very early stage, is a theatre piece for young audiences that I'm developing with Metro Theater Company (St. Louis, MO) about the compelling and confounding subjects of gender identity, and gender-based bullying, among pre-adolescent kids.

One phenomenon I find unique and exciting about writing for young audiences is that the audience itself becomes a kind of collaborative partner. I recently wrote about this in a little post on Cheek Teeth, a kickass blog created by Trachodon Magazine, an excellent journal of lit, art, and culture co-edited by my friend and writer extraordinaire Katey Schultz.

Check it out - and stay tuned for more info on this project and more writing, here, soon!

Uh-oh

A woman had a heartbreak in my cab tonight.
It was a messy thing. Her hands
Sat in her lap. Her feet
Stayed where she put them, on the floor.
Her eyes looked out the window.
Her mouth thanked me, at the door where I left her,
3:20 AM,
to shoulder purse and computer up brownstone stairs.

But then I checked the back seat and there it was:
sticky, selfish,
soaked
through the vinyl, into the foam, corroding
the motor for all I know.

I should've known better.

No
body
leaves one brownstone alone
for another
at that hour
without a heartbreak in the back of a cab in between.

I’m telling you, brother.
It was a big
Mess.
